Every beauty brand founder I’ve worked with asks the same question first: “How much does a tube cost?” And the answer is always the same — “It depends.” But today, I’m going to give you the exact formula I use to calculate tube cost-per-unit, with real numbers from the Indian market.
The Components of Tube Cost
A cosmetic tube’s cost is made up of five layers:
- Tube body — the material (PE Coex, ABL, or PBL)
- Decoration — printing, lamination, foiling
- Cap & closure — flip-top, screw cap, disc-top, pump
- Tooling — one-time costs for moulds, cylinders, dies
- Overheads — packing, freight, GST, sampling
Real Cost Breakdown (50ml PE Coex Tube)
Let’s calculate for a standard 50ml PE Coex tube with offset printing, 4 colours, matte lamination, and a flip-top cap. Order quantity: 10,000 units.
| Component | Cost/Unit (₹) |
|---|---|
| Tube body (PE Coex, 50ml, D30) | ₹3.50 |
| Offset printing (4 colours) | ₹1.20 |
| Matte lamination | ₹0.50 |
| Flip-top cap | ₹1.80 |
| Packing & dispatch | ₹0.40 |
| Sub-total per tube | ₹7.40 |
| GST (18%) | ₹1.33 |
| Total per tube | ₹8.73 |
One-Time Tooling Costs
| Tooling Item | Cost (₹) |
|---|---|
| Printing cylinders (4 colours) | ₹40,000–₹60,000 |
| Hot foil die (if applicable) | ₹5,000–₹8,000 |
| Custom cap mould (if needed) | ₹80,000–₹2,00,000 |
| Colour matching samples | ₹3,000–₹5,000 |
Important: Tooling is a one-time cost. On a 10,000-unit order, it adds ₹4–₹8 per tube. On a 50,000-unit order, it’s less than ₹1 per tube. This is why volume matters.
How Volume Changes Everything
| Order Qty | Cost/Tube (₹) | Tooling Amortized | Effective Cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3,000 | ₹9.50 | ₹16.00 | ₹25.50 |
| 10,000 | ₹7.40 | ₹5.00 | ₹12.40 |
| 25,000 | ₹6.20 | ₹2.00 | ₹8.20 |
| 50,000 | ₹5.40 | ₹1.00 | ₹6.40 |
| 1,00,000 | ₹4.80 | ₹0.50 | ₹5.30 |
The Hidden Costs Nobody Tells You
- Artwork revisions: Most manufacturers give 2 free revisions. After that, ₹1,500–₹3,000 per change.
- Colour matching: Pantone matching on plastic is tricky. Budget for 2-3 sample rounds.
- Freight: ₹2,000–₹5,000 per delivery depending on distance and quantity.
- Minimum billing: Some manufacturers have a minimum order value of ₹50,000–₹1,00,000.
My Pricing Formula
For retail pricing, I recommend this formula:
Retail Price = (Product Cost + Tube Cost + Filling Cost) × 4 to 6
If your total COGS (tube + product + filling + boxing) is ₹45, your retail price should be ₹180–₹270. This gives you room for margins, distributor commissions, and marketing spend.
